Designed for decades of service

Our distribution transformers are engineered around premium core and winding materials and three design disciplines (thermal, mechanical, and dielectric), each with margin above the applicable standards and finishes matched to the installation environment.

Core and Windings

Cores are built from low-loss, high-permeability cold-rolled grain-oriented (CRGO) electrical steel, with step-lap mitred joints that reduce no-load loss, noise and magnetising current, or from amorphous metal for the lowest no-load losses. Windings are high-conductivity electrolytic copper or electrical-grade aluminium, with aluminium windings sized to match the losses and short-circuit strength of copper. LV windings are wound from foil, which balances axial short-circuit forces, and HV windings use insulated conductor with diamond-dotted epoxy paper between layers, bonded into a solid block during curing. Every active part is vacuum dried, firmly clamped and vacuum filled with oil.

Thermal Design

Thermal design is dominated by efficiency and long-term insulation stability. Our transformers are engineered with margin above the applicable efficiency regime (MEPS for AS/NZS networks; US DOE distribution transformer efficiency standards for ANSI/IEEE networks), using low-loss grain-oriented electrical steel or amorphous-metal cores for beyond-baseline efficiency classes. Cooling class is typically ONAN, though can be ONAF, matched to enclosure and duty cycle. Sealed tank construction extends insulation life across humid, salty, and dust-heavy environments.

Mechanical Design

Our transformers are designed and verified to IEC 60076-5 and ANSI/IEEE C57.12.90 short-circuit withstand requirements with defined margins above the network fault level.

Dielectric Design

Dielectric performance is set against the network's standard basic lightning impulse levels (BIL): typically 95 kV BIL for 15 kV class, 125 kV for 22 to 24 kV class, and 150 kV for 33 to 34.5 kV class, with higher levels available where the utility specifies. Our transformers are designed with margin above the applicable IEC 60076-3 or ANSI/IEEE C57.12 dielectric test levels. Insulation systems are selected against the application's thermal class (Class A cellulose or thermally-upgraded paper for oil-immersed units; Class F or H cast resin for dry-type). Partial discharge is measured at factory acceptance testing well below the applicable thresholds, and lightning surge coordination with network protection is considered at design stage.

Operational performance

Our distribution transformers are specified to deliver:

Low Losses and MEPS Compliance

No-load, load, and stray losses optimised to meet or exceed the applicable efficiency regime: MEPS for AS/NZS networks and US DOE distribution transformer efficiency standards for ANSI/IEEE-standard 60 Hz networks. Higher-efficiency classes and amorphous-metal core options available for utilities pursuing beyond-baseline efficiency targets.

Corrosion Resistance and Outdoor Durability

Every transformer is protected to ISO 12944 C5 with high durability (15 to 25 years) as standard, for coastal, humid and heavy industrial sites. Pole-mounted tanks and lids are hot-dip galvanised and painted, and both pole and pad mounted units can instead be powder coated to ISO 12944 C5: a zinc-rich primer and weather-resistant topcoat on steel blast cleaned to Sa 2½, in three coats at 260 μm for high durability (15 to 25 years), with the coating system tested to ISO 12944-6. Stainless steel (304 / 316) tank options are available for ANSI/IEEE variants where marine exposure demands the highest corrosion resistance. Fully sealed construction reduces moisture ingress and extends insulation life.

Long Service Life

With controlled operating temperatures, low losses, and sealed construction, our transformers are designed for service lives of 40 years and more, the multi-decade lives utility asset management programmes depend on. Materials, insulation systems, and finishes are matched to the specified installation environment.

Wide Configuration Range

Single-phase, three-phase, and SWER designs; copper or aluminium windings; pole and pad mountings including kiosk-style; primary voltages across AS/NZS and ANSI/IEEE distribution classes; secondary voltages across standard and industrial ratings. Custom configurations available.

Competitive Lead Times and Local Stock

Common distribution transformer ratings can be supplied fast from local stock. Custom units are scheduled directly with manufacturing partners to align with customer construction programmes and asset renewal projects. Lead time is treated as a project-critical commitment, not a soft target.

Sourcing and quality assurance

We source premium distribution transformers from established, highest-quality international manufacturers whose units are operating in demanding networks worldwide. Where distribution transformers fall short in service, the cause is typically traceable to active-part design, materials, or manufacturing quality. Every unit supplied is:

  • From a design that is type tested, including temperature rise to IEC 60076-2, lightning impulse to IEC 60076-3, sound level to IEC 60076-10, and short-circuit withstand to IEC 60076-5
  • Routine tested to IEC 60076-1 (or AS/NZS 60076.1) before dispatch, with no exceptions: winding resistance, voltage ratio and vector group, short-circuit impedance and load loss, no-load loss and current, applied and induced voltage tests to IEC 60076-3, and tap-changer and current transformer checks where fitted
  • Pressure and leak tested, with every sealed tank checked before oil filling and dispatch
  • Built with tanks welded to ISO 3834 quality requirements, and with 316 stainless steel fasteners and nameplates as standard
  • Available for factory acceptance testing witnessed by you or your representative
  • Available with natural ester insulating fluid in place of mineral oil: biodegradable and less flammable (K-class), for environmentally sensitive, indoor and urban sites
  • Available with seismic qualification (IEEE 693 High Performance Level / AS 1170.4 / NZS 1170.5) for installations in seismic zones
  • Supplied with full routine test reports and material traceability
