The range

A crossarm carries the conductors and insulators at the top of the pole, so it has to hold their weight, wind and fault loads, and resist the weather for decades. Hardwood, steel and composite crossarms are each covered below, with the fixings that go with them.

Customised designs available. If your project needs a length, strength, drilling pattern or arrangement outside the standard range, we supply crossarms designed and made to your requirements.

Hardwood Crossarms

Hardwood timber crossarms in the standard sizes and drilling patterns used on distribution lines. Timber is familiar to crews, can be cut and drilled on site, and has natural insulating properties. It is heavier than composite and is exposed to rot, termites and fire over time, so it suits lines built to timber standards.

Steel Crossarms

Galvanised steel crossarms for heavier loads, longer spans and sub transmission and transmission construction. Steel gives the highest strength for its size, does not rot or burn, is not affected by termites, and its galvanised finish needs little maintenance.

Composite Crossarms

Fibreglass reinforced composite crossarms with a protective coating and sealed end caps. They are about half the weight of an equivalent timber crossarm, so one person can usually fit one from an elevated work platform, and they do not rot, are not eaten by termites and stand up well to bushfire and pole top fire. Arms arrive pre drilled to the standard patterns, with support brackets for changes on site, and can be repurposed at the end of their life.

Choosing a Material

Hardwood suits lines built to timber standards. Steel suits the heaviest loads and transmission construction. Composite suits lines where weight, fire, termites or corrosion are the main risks, and utilities are increasingly replacing timber arms with it. We help you match arms to the loading and the hardware already on your poles.

Design and performance

Crossarms chosen for the load and the weather.

Matched to the Region

Crossarms are chosen for bushfire, termites, coastal salt, strong sunlight and cyclone winds, which are the conditions on networks across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Fits Your Network

Arms are supplied to match the standard sizes, drilling patterns and hardware used on your network, so they can replace existing arms directly.

Designed to the Load

Bending strength and length are matched to the loads on the line, from light distribution arms to heavy sub transmission arms, with arms made to order for non standard constructions.

Protected Against the Elements

Composite arms have a coating that resists sunlight, salt spray and weather and adds flame resistance, with sealed end caps to keep water out. Steel arms are hot dip galvanised.

Safer to Handle

Composite arms are far lighter than timber, which lowers the manual handling risk for line crews working at height.

Fixings

Each crossarm is supplied with the fixings that suit its material, so the arm arrives ready to fit.

Hardwood Crossarm Fixings

Crossarm bolts, braces and brace bolts, curved washers and saddles, drilled to your pattern.

Steel Crossarm Fixings

Mounting brackets, bolts and braces, galvanised to match the arm, with insulator mounting plates and pins.

Composite Crossarm Fixings

Through bolts, braces and universal support brackets that avoid drilling the arm on site, spare end caps, and fittings for insulators and line equipment. Self tapping screws suit light attachments such as small wiring.

Insulator Mounting

Pins, post insulator mounts and strain hardware to complete each arm. See insulators for the types we supply.

Applications

Delstar supplies crossarms for:

01

Distribution Lines

Crossarms for 11 kV, 22 kV and 33 kV overhead lines, in single and multiple circuit arrangements.

02

Sub Transmission Lines

Steel and composite arms for heavier conductors and longer spans.

03

Bushfire Prone Areas

Composite and steel arms that resist fire, for lines through high fire risk country.

04

Coastal and Island Networks

Arms that resist salt, moisture, termites and cyclone winds, light enough for remote handling.

05

Line Upgrades and Crossarm Replacement

Matched arms for planned replacement programmes, supplied in bulk or in stages.

06

Rural and Remote Lines

Light arms and simple fixings for sites with difficult access and small crews.

Sourcing and quality assurance

We supply crossarms in hardwood, steel and composite from established manufacturers, selected for each project to suit the loading, the site and your specification. Delstar checks each order against your drawings and requirements, and delivers across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.

Lifecycle support

  • Specification and selection: we help match the crossarm material, length, strength and drilling pattern to your construction standards and the poles and hardware already in service.
  • Drawings and data: crossarm and fixing drawings and design data for your approvals.
  • Fitting guidance: advice on fitting and field changes for each material, including support brackets where drilling is not wanted.
  • Replacement programmes: bulk and staged supply for planned crossarm replacement.
  • Delivery: coordinated delivery to depot, site or port, including remote and island destinations.
