The range

A pole is the main structure of an overhead line, and the right material depends on the load, the site and how the line will be built and maintained. We supply four, each covered below, so the choice is made on what suits your project.

Customised designs available. If your project needs a length, strength, finish or arrangement outside the standard range, we supply poles designed and made to your loading and specification.

Steel Poles

Tapered galvanised steel poles with multiple flat sides, for distribution, sub transmission and transmission lines. They are light for their strength, do not rot or burn, and are not affected by termites or other insects. Poles are set in the ground or mounted on a base plate, with the finish and mounting holes made to your specification. Steel is a direct replacement for timber or concrete poles on most lines, and needs little maintenance over its life.

Composite Poles

Fibreglass reinforced composite poles in tapered or straight sections. They are light enough to handle and erect with small crews and light equipment, do not rust or rot, resist termites and give good electrical insulation. Each pole is sealed at the tip and can be drilled on site when a fitting needs to move, and the colour can match timber poles already on the line. Composite suits difficult access, remote sites and corrosive coastal ground.

Concrete Poles

Prestressed and spun concrete poles in round, octagonal and I section profiles for distribution and transmission lines. Concrete does not rot or rust, is not affected by salt, moisture or insects, and does not burn, so it suits coastal, wet and fire prone sites with very little maintenance. Poles are normally set directly in the ground without a separate foundation, to an embedment depth set by the pole length and loading, and are rated for guyed or unguyed use. Holes and earthing provisions are built in, and a designed foundation is used where the ground or loading requires it. They are heavier than other materials, so handling and delivery are planned around that.

Hardwood Poles

Natural Australian hardwood utility poles from durable species such as blackbutt, spotted gum and ironbark, graded to AS 3818.11 and available in lengths from about 8 m to 26 m across several strength classes. Poles are preservative treated with copper chrome arsenate to the H5 in ground contact hazard class of AS 1604.1, which protects against decay and termites. They are trimmed, dressed, chamfered and drilled to order, and each pole is marked with its length, strength class, treatment and batch reference. Timber is familiar to line crews, easy to climb and fit out on site, and a natural electrical insulator, so it suits distribution, sub transmission, lighting and communications lines where timber is the established standard. It is heavier than composite and still exposed to fire and weathering over time.

Choosing a Material

Steel suits long spans, heavy loads and taller structures. Composite suits difficult access, remote sites and corrosive ground. Concrete suits coastal, wet and fire prone sites where weight is not a problem. Hardwood suits distribution lines built to timber standards. We help you choose against your loading, your ground conditions and the poles already on your network.

Design and performance

Poles chosen for the conditions they will stand in.

Matched to the Region

Poles are chosen for cyclone winds, coastal salt, strong sunlight, bushfire, termites and aggressive soils, which are the conditions on networks across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Designed to Your Loads

Strength and length are matched to the loading, the span and the conductors. Standard sizes cover common distribution duties, and heavier or non standard lines are designed to order.

Built for Decades of Service

Steel, composite and concrete poles do not rot, and galvanised steel generally needs little more than an occasional check of the ground line, where corrosion starts first. The finish is chosen for the soil and the exposure at the site.

Light to Handle, Quick to Erect

Steel and composite poles are lighter than concrete, which makes delivery and erection easier on steep, remote and island sites, and lets smaller crews and lighter equipment do the work.

Drawings and Design Data

We work with your engineers on loading, drawings and design data, so each structure can be checked against your own standards before it is ordered.

Fixings

Each pole is supplied with the fixings that suit its material, so the structure arrives complete.

Steel Pole Fixings

Base plates, anchor bolts and templates for foundation mounted poles, pole top caps, earthing points, lifting points, identification plates, and climbing steps or step bolts. Holes for crossarms and brackets are made to your drilling pattern.

Composite Pole Fixings

Pole tip caps and butt plates, identification plates, through bolts and brackets for crossarms and equipment, and slip in climbing steps. Holes are pre drilled to your pattern, with site drilling possible for small changes.

Concrete Pole Fixings

Lifting anchors, holes for crossarms and brackets, earthing provisions built into the reinforcement, and pole top caps. Poles are normally supplied for setting directly in the ground.

Hardwood Pole Fixings

Crossarm bolts and braces, pole top caps, step bolts and identification plates, with gains and drilling to your utility standard. Fittings are matched to the treated timber, and cut ends and new holes are treated on site.

Stays and Anchors

Stay wire, stay rods, anchors and stay insulators can be supplied with any pole type, for angle, dead end and terminal poles.

Applications

Delstar supplies poles for:

01

Distribution Lines

Poles for 11 kV, 22 kV and 33 kV overhead lines in urban, rural and industrial areas.

02

Sub Transmission and Transmission Lines

Steel and concrete poles for longer spans, heavier conductors and higher voltage lines.

03

Coastal and Island Networks

Poles that resist salt, moisture and cyclone winds, with light options for remote handling.

04

Bushfire Prone Areas

Steel, composite and concrete poles that do not feed a fire, for lines through high fire risk country.

05

Rural and Remote Lines

Light poles and simple fixings for sites with difficult access and small crews.

06

Line Upgrades and Pole Replacement

Replacement poles matched to the crossarms, hardware and conductors already in service.

Sourcing and quality assurance

We supply poles in steel, composite, concrete and hardwood from established manufacturers, selected for each project to suit the loading, the site and your specification. Hardwood poles come graded and certified to AS 3818.11 by an independent timber inspector, with treatment and batch traceability records. Delstar checks each order against your drawings and requirements, and delivers across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.

Lifecycle support

  • Specification and selection: we help match the pole material, length, strength and finish to your loading, ground conditions and the network around it.
  • Drawings and data: structural and fixing drawings and design data for your approvals.
  • Delivery: coordinated delivery to depot, site or port, including remote and island destinations.
  • Inspection and care: guidance on inspecting each pole material in service, and condition assessment through our asset management service.
  • Replacement and upgrade: supply of matched poles for planned replacement programmes.
