The range

Insulators hold and isolate conductors on poles, crossarms and towers. The range covers the types used on distribution and transmission lines, from pin and line post insulators to suspension, strain and stay insulators, with the fittings that connect them.

Customised designs available. If your project needs ratings, features, design requirements or arrangements outside the standard range below, we design and manufacture to your requirements and application.

Pin and Line Post Insulators

Support the conductor on the pole or crossarm of distribution lines. Pin insulators carry the conductor in a groove on the top, while line post insulators are fixed at the base and hold the conductor to the side or top of the unit, which suits tighter corridors and higher voltages. Available in porcelain and polymer.

Suspension Insulators

Hang from the crossarm or tower and carry the conductor below, either as a string of discs or as a single long rod unit. Porcelain and glass cap and pin discs are built up into strings to suit the line voltage, and polymer long rod insulators give a lighter alternative.

Strain and Dead End Insulators

Take the full conductor tension at line angles, dead ends and terminations. They are used singly or as a double string where the load is high, with matching dead end fittings, in porcelain, glass or polymer.

Stay Insulators

Fitted into stay wires to isolate the lower part of the stay from the upper part, so a stay wire that touches a live conductor stays safe at ground level. Supplied in porcelain for the stay wire sizes used on distribution lines.

Insulator Fittings and String Assemblies

Insulators are supplied with the fittings needed to connect them, including ball and socket and clevis end fittings, links and yokes, and can be delivered as complete insulator string assemblies for suspension and strain positions, ready to install.

Materials

Each type is available in the materials that suit it, so you can match the insulator to the line, the environment and your maintenance approach.

Porcelain Insulators

Glazed porcelain insulators from low voltage up to 550 kV, in pin, post, suspension and station types. Porcelain has a long service record and resists ultraviolet light and surface ageing. Designs with a longer creepage path suit polluted and coastal sites.

Glass Insulators

Toughened glass cap and pin discs rated from 40 to 550 kN. A damaged disc shatters, so a failed unit can be seen from the ground without testing. An RTV (room temperature vulcanising) silicone coating is available to improve performance in polluted areas.

Polymer Insulators

Composite polymer insulators for 10 to 500 kV, with a fibreglass core and a weather shed housing. They are light, which makes handling and installation easier, and they resist breakage and vandalism. The hydrophobic surface suits wet, coastal and polluted conditions.

Choosing a Material

Porcelain suits conventional distribution and station applications, glass suits long strings where visual inspection matters, and polymer suits lighter structures and polluted or vandal prone sites. We recommend the combination that suits your line, your pollution level and the equipment already installed.

Design and performance

Insulators chosen for the conditions they will work in.

Matched to Your Environment

Creepage distance and shed profile are chosen for the pollution level at the site, from clean rural lines to salt laden coastal and island networks, with fog type porcelain, RTV coated glass and hydrophobic polymer options.

Rated for the Mechanical Load

Mechanical strength is matched to the load the insulator carries, from light distribution spans to heavy strain positions, with glass discs rated up to 550 kN.

Complete Insulator Strings

Insulators, end fittings and links are supplied together, so strings arrive assembled and matched, which reduces site work and the chance of mismatched parts.

Tested Designs

Type test reports are available for the designs we supply, and we can provide them with technical submissions.
